How to write a cover letter that gets read
A strong cover letter is short, specific, and written in your own voice. It opens with a clear statement of the role you are applying for, gives the reader two or three concrete reasons you are a good fit, and closes with a confident next step. The 15 templates on this page are pre-written examples for the most common situations — pick one that matches yours, then personalize it.
A typical cover letter has six parts: your contact block, the date, the recipient's name and address, a salutation (use a person's name when you can), three to four body paragraphs, and a closing with your signature. The body is where most of the work happens: paragraph one names the role and your hook, paragraph two covers your most relevant experience and one or two measurable results, and paragraph three connects what you do to what the company does.
The built-in AI writing assistant is useful in two modes. Use the AI Draft button when you have a role, a company, and 2–3 things you want to highlight, and you want a complete first draft to react to. Use the per-paragraph ✨ AI button when a paragraph is close but not quite right — it can Improve, Shorten, Expand, or shift the tone toward Friendlier or More Professional. Always read the result and edit it back into your voice before you send it.
Cover letter editor — questions, answered
Is the cover letter editor really free?
Yes — 100% free, with no signup, no trial, and no paywall. You can edit any of the 15 templates, use the AI assistant within fair-use limits, and export to PDF or Word at no cost.
How does the AI cover letter assistant work?
The AI assistant is powered by Claude. While editing any paragraph you can click the ✨ AI button to Improve, Shorten, Expand, make it Friendlier, or make it More Professional. The AI Draft button generates four body paragraphs from your role, company, and 2–3 highlights. Always review AI output before sending.
Do you store my cover letter or my AI prompts?
Your cover letter content is auto-saved locally in your browser via localStorage — it is not uploaded to our servers. AI assist requests do call our API to reach the model and we log usage metrics (token counts, timestamps) for cost monitoring, but we do not retain your letter content beyond the immediate request.
What is the difference between a cover letter and an application letter?
In practice the two terms are used interchangeably. "Cover letter" is more common in the United States; "application letter" is more common in academic and international contexts. The structure is identical: sender block, date, recipient, salutation, three to four body paragraphs, closing, and signature.
Can I download my cover letter as a Word document?
Yes. Click the Download button in the editor toolbar and choose "Download as Word" to export a .docx file you can open in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or any compatible editor. PDF export is also available.
Which template should I use if I have no experience?
Use the Entry-Level Cover Letter or the Recent Graduate Cover Letter. Both lead with education, coursework, projects, and transferable skills rather than work history.
Do you have a cover letter template for healthcare or nursing roles?
Yes. The Healthcare / Nursing Cover Letter template is structured around clinical credentials (RN, BSN, certifications), patient-centered care, and unit-specific experience. It is suitable for hospital, clinic, and allied-health applications.
